Winter Storm Fire Safety

As the waters of Walpole freeze this winter the fire department receives many calls asking if the ice is safe to skate on.  The simple answer is NO.  The Walpole Fire Department does not inspect, test or monitor the lakes and ponds in Walpole to see if the ice is safe.  There are many factors that go into determining the strength of ice such as currents, debris, depth, and temperature.

Remember, the only safe ice, is at an ice skating arena.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has this fact sheet available to you.
